MoCA (Montreal Cognitive Assessment) was developed by Nasreddine in 2005 as a more sensitive screen than MMSE for mild cognitive impairment. The paper-based test covers visuospatial tasks (5 points), animal naming (3), attention (6), language (3), abstraction (2), delayed recall (5) and orientation (6). Range 0–30. This calculator does not administer the test – enter the total score from in-person assessment. With ≤12 years of education a +1 bonus is added (unless the score is already 30). Categories by adjusted score: ≥26 normal, 18–25 mild cognitive impairment, 10–17 moderate dementia, <10 severe. MoCA outperforms MMSE in the 22–28 range, so the Spanish Society of Neurology (SEN) recommends MoCA as the first screen when MCI or early Alzheimer disease is suspected.
