INCI: Charcoal Powder
Porous carbon with high adsorption surface. In cleansing masks and pastes it binds dirt, sebum and pigments from the skin surface and gives the formula its signature black colour.
Topical application
CWeak evidence. In vitro data, open-label studies, or expert consensus.
Adsorbent that works on the skin surface in rinse-off formats. It does not detoxify the body through the skin: that 'detox' positioning is marketing, not proven mechanism.
Activated Charcoal (Carbo Activatus) is a porous form of carbon with high specific surface (up to 1500 m²/g). Produced by pyrolysis of organic feedstock (coconut shell, wood, peat) followed by activation with steam or chemical reagents. Mechanism. Powerful adsorbent: binds organic molecules, sebum, surface debris, and pigments from the skin surface via van der Waals forces. Acts only on the surface – does not penetrate the epidermis. In the gut, medical use is for poisoning and gas; on skin, the effect is strictly external. Where applied. Cleansing peel-off masks, cleansing foams, soaps for oily and acne-prone skin (1–5%), toothpaste, deodorants. Brands: Origins Clear Improvement, Boscia Luminizing Charcoal, many K-beauty masks; in Spain – Sesderma Charcoal Detox Mask, Mesoestetic Cosmelan Detox. Evidence base. Few RCTs; the main base is that activated charcoal's adsorbent properties have been known since the early 20th century. Skin benefit is limited to the cleansing effect of the mask – there is no real 'detoxification' of the body through the skin (toxins clear via liver and kidneys). The dark color produces a visually dramatic 'dirt on the mask' effect – a psychological bonus. Safety. CIR confirmed safety of activated charcoal in cosmetics. Hypoallergenic, non-irritating, non-comedogenic. No systemic action. Pregnancy and lactation – safe. Acceptable at any stage. Oral activated charcoal in pregnancy is used without restriction for gas. Particularly suitable for. Oily and combination skin, acne-prone, enlarged pores. Charcoal masks 1–2× per week. Not for dry skin or for compromised barrier (atopy, rosacea flare).

Activated Charcoal is considered safe during pregnancy at typical cosmetic concentrations. Systemic absorption through the skin is minimal.
Activated Charcoal suits: normal, oily, combination. Use with caution in: dry, sensitive.
