Anthemis Nobilis Flower Oil (Roman chamomile essential oil) is an essential oil from Roman chamomile flowers. Not to be confused with Matricaria (German chamomile, Matricaria recutita), whose active component is bisabolol. Roman chamomile contains angelic and tiglic acid esters, α-pinene, farnesene. Claimed mechanism. Local anti-inflammatory, antispasmodic, calming action. Used for fragrance (mild, fruity-apple) and the claimed soothing effect. Where applied. Baby skincare lines, sensitive-skin products, aromatherapy, perfume compositions. Concentration 0.05–0.5%. Safety. Essential oils from the Asteraceae family are a known contact-allergen group. Sensitization in 5–10% of eczema patients; cross-sensitization in patients allergic to mugwort, ragweed, lettuce. Contains components from the EU 26 fragrance allergen list. Pregnancy and lactation – use with caution. Direct data are scarce. Oral Roman chamomile in pregnancy is contraindicated due to a theoretical link with uterine contractions. Topical use at cosmetic concentrations is ambiguous. Avoid in the first trimester as a precaution. Not suitable for. Known Asteraceae allergy (chamomile, ragweed, mugwort, lettuce), atopic dermatitis, very sensitive skin, child face under age 3.
