Ethoxylated fatty alcohol with an average of 12 ethylene oxide groups. Acts as a non-ionic emulsifier and solubilizer – helps incorporate oils and essential oils into the water phase of micellar waters, toners and sunscreens. Does not remain on skin, rinses off with water.
Topical application
BLimited evidence. One RCT or several controlled studies with limitations.
Functional emulsifier. Safety confirmed by CIR at typical formulation concentrations. No standalone activity on skin.
C12-14 Alketh-12 is a non-ionic surfactant – an ethoxylated fatty alcohol with an average of 12 ethylene oxide groups and a C12-C14 carbon chain. Mechanism. Works as a solubiliser and emulsifier: helps incorporate poorly water-miscible components (oils, essential oils, silicones, UV filters) into the aqueous formula phase. Forms micelles carrying hydrophobic molecules. Does not remain on skin, rinses off with water. Where applied. Micellar waters, toners, body lotions, shampoos, conditioners, light sunscreens. Concentration 0.5–5%. In Spain in Bioderma, La Roche-Posay, ISDIN, and mass-market lines. Safety. CIR confirmed safety of the ethoxylated alcohol family in cosmetics in 2018. Contact allergies and irritation are rare. Non-comedogenic. Pregnancy and lactation – safe. Used without restriction. 1,4-Dioxane controversy. Ethoxylated ingredients can theoretically contain trace 1,4-dioxane. Quality producers monitor levels – SCCS and AEMPS limits are met. Functional role. A formula surfactant aid. No standalone skin activity.
