INCI: Castanea Sativa Seed Extract
Sweet chestnut seed extract. Contains tannins, esculin and esculetin – compounds with in vitro antioxidant and capillary-protective potential. In cosmetics – in eye creams and products for couperose-prone skin. Limited clinical RCTs on topical use.
Topical application
CWeak evidence. In vitro data, open-label studies, or expert consensus.
Antioxidant profile confirmed in vitro. Few human topical RCTs, capillary-strengthening claims are supported only by morphological data so far.
Sweet chestnut seed extract (Castanea Sativa Seed Extract) is obtained from the kernels of Castanea sativa. It contains tannins, esculin, esculetin, flavonoids, and vitamin C. Horse chestnut (Aesculus hippocastanum – not to be confused) is used in herbal pharmacopoeia for chronic venous insufficiency; data on sweet chestnut are scarcer. In vitro mechanism. Tannins and esculin show antioxidant and capillary-protective activity – they strengthen small-vessel walls and reduce permeability. In oxidative-stress models the extract shields keratinocytes from UV-induced damage. Where applied. Eye creams and serums against puffiness and dark circles, products for couperose and rosacea-prone skin, anti-aging formulas. Less common in Spain than horse chestnut extract. Evidence base. Few direct clinical RCTs on topical use; mostly in vitro and pilot studies. Transferring horse-chestnut data is incorrect – different species. The Cochrane Review of horse chestnut (2012) supports oral forms in CVI, not topical or sweet chestnut. Safety. CIR has not issued a separate review. SCCS lists no restrictions. Hypoallergenic; contact dermatitis only as case reports. Use with caution in patients allergic to nuts and chestnuts (theoretical cross-reactivity). Pregnancy – with caution. Topical cosmetic concentrations are safe, but with limited data the preferred alternatives are well-studied options (caffeine, niacinamide, eye-area peptides). Systemic chestnut preparations are not recommended in pregnancy. What to expect. A modest antioxidant and capillary-protective effect as part of a broader routine. Not a standalone treatment for couperose or puffiness – consult a clinician.
