Cellulose (E460) is a linear polysaccharide of β-D-glucose residues, the main structural component of plant cell walls. In cosmetics it is an insoluble powder filler and thickener. Sources. Wood pulp (most often), cotton, bamboo, hemp. Microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) is a purified fraction; nanocrystals are a newer technology for matte textures. Where applied. Powders, loose eyeshadows and blushes (as bulk filler), mattifying primers, dry masks, peeling-off rolls (mechanical exfoliation). In liquid forms – as a thickener (hydroxyethyl-, methyl-, carboxymethyl-cellulose) in shampoos, shower gels, toothpastes, contact lenses. In Spain – in decorative cosmetics from Sensilis, Babaria, Mádara. Evidence base. A functional ingredient with no direct skin action. Does not moisturize or treat. SCCS rates cellulose as an inert and safe filler. Safety. CIR confirmed safety of all cellulose forms (MCC, hydroxyethyl-, methyl-, carboxymethyl-) at use concentrations. Hypoallergenic, non-comedogenic. Cellulose nanocrystals have prompted discussion of potential toxicity, but no clinical harm from topical use has been confirmed. Pregnancy and lactation – safe. Acceptable at any stage, including areas in contact with the infant. Suitable for. Universal. Oily skin – a good mattifying component. In scrubs, mechanical exfoliation is harsher than chemical – patients with couperose, rosacea, and sensitive skin should pick enzyme or mild AHA options.

The Evigrade extension adds an evidence panel to Wildberries, Goldapple, Letu, iHerb, Sephora and 12 more stores. This ingredient and every other one in the product show evidence-tier, allergen risk and pregnancy/lactation flags at a glance.
Cellulose is considered safe during pregnancy at typical cosmetic concentrations. Systemic absorption through the skin is minimal.
