INCI: CI 77007
Synthetic mineral pigment – sodium aluminosilicate with sulfur. Gives deep blue, violet, pink and green shades. Lightfast, does not react with skin. Banned in lip and mucosal products in the US (FDA) but allowed in the EU. In face and body products – allowed everywhere.
Topical application
BLimited evidence. One RCT or several controlled studies with limitations.
Functional mineral pigment. Banned in the US for lips and eye area (FDA 21 CFR 73.50), allowed in the EU without restrictions. No cosmetic skin activity.
Ultramarines (CI 77007) are synthetic mineral pigments – sulfur-containing sodium aluminosilicates. Color range: deep blue (ultramarine blue), violet, pink, green – depending on sulfur ratio and heat treatment. Discovered in 1828 as a synthetic analogue to expensive natural lapis. Where applied. Decorative cosmetics: eyeshadows, blushes, BB creams, foundations. Concentration 1-30% (as pigment). In Spain – across all decorative cosmetic brands Bobbi Brown, Mac, NYX, Sensilis, Babaria. In yellow-tone-neutralizing correctors – violet ultramarine. Mechanism. Pure mineral pigment. Does not react with skin, does not penetrate the epidermis (molecule too large). Colors the surface via light reflection. Stable to light, temperature, oxidizers. Does not fade. Evidence base. A functional ingredient – pigment. No therapeutic efficacy. Safety. CIR confirmed safety up to 100% (in pigment blends). SCCS imposed no restrictions on skin or eyelids. In the US the FDA bans ultramarines in lip and mucosal products (contact with the digestive tract due to sulfur traces), but in the EU, Spain and most countries it is allowed. Allergic reactions are extremely rare. FDA lip controversy. Since 1976 FDA has banned ultramarines in lipsticks, lip glosses, and mucosal products due to theoretical risk of ingesting traces of sulfur and aluminum. No such ban exists in the EU – SCCS assessed risks as negligible. As a result European lipsticks in violet and blue shades are available in the US as "non-FDA-approved". Pregnancy and lactation – safe. Acceptable at any stage. Since the pigment does not penetrate skin, systemic absorption is zero. Lips during breastfeeding – individualized decision (FDA standard is stricter than European out of precaution). Suitable for. Universal in decorative cosmetics. Sensitive eyelid skin – not problematic; allergic reactions extremely rare.
