Cucurbita Pepo Seed Extract is derived from the seeds of common pumpkin Cucurbita pepo. Contains phytosterols (β-sitosterol, cucurbitol), zinc, selenium, tocopherols, unsaturated fatty acids. Mechanism. In vitro phytosterols show antiandrogenic activity – they inhibit 5α-reductase, the enzyme converting testosterone into dihydrotestosterone (DHT). Zinc is a cofactor for dozens of enzymes, including those regulating sebum. Manufacturers market the extract for oily and acne-prone skin and for scalp care (androgenetic hair loss). Where applied. Serums and creams for oily and combination skin, products against seborrheic dermatitis, antiandrogen-positioned hair shampoos and tonics. In Spain – Aromatica Pumpkin, niche hair brands Pilexil, Frenadol, in anti-hair-loss shampoos. Evidence base. Topical clinical data are limited. Oral pumpkin seed oil 400 mg/day in the Cho 2014 RCT reduced hair loss in men with androgenetic alopecia over 24 weeks. Topical data are mostly in vitro on 5α-reductase. No direct confirmation of clinical efficacy on skin and hair from topical use. Safety. CIR has not issued a direct evaluation, but the cucurbit family is generally safe topically. Allergic reactions are rare. Pregnancy and lactation – safe at standard cosmetic concentrations. Oral antiandrogen-positioned supplements during pregnancy should be used cautiously. Best suited to: oily and combination skin, scalp products for oily tendency. Not the main active for acne or hair loss – a marketing-driven active with a limited evidence base.
