Ethylhexyl Stearate (Octyl Stearate) is a synthetic ester of 2-ethylhexyl alcohol with stearic acid. A liquid emollient with light dry slip; softens skin and improves cream spreadability. Where applied. Body and face creams, lotions, sunscreens, color cosmetics, hair products (1-20%). Often replaces heavy plant oils in formulas for oily and combination skin. Compatible with most UV filters. Evidence base. CIR Final Report 2014 confirmed safety up to 25% in leave-on. No standalone skin activity – a functional ingredient for texture and emulsion stability. Safety. Hypoallergenic. Irritation is rare. Does not photosensitize. RIPT data from manufacturers show lower comedogenicity than isopropyl myristate and palmitate. Pregnancy and lactation – safe.
