Hexyl Cinnamal (HCA) is a synthetic aromatic aldehyde with a jasmine- and lily-like floral scent, produced by chemical synthesis from cinnamaldehyde. Used in perfumery and cosmetics as a fragrance component in toners, lotions, creams, soaps, shampoos, perfumes, and household products. Listed among the 26 EU mandatory disclosed cosmetic allergens (Annex III, Regulation 1223/2009): at >0.001% in leave-on and >0.01% in rinse-off products, it must appear by INCI on the label. SCCS pharmacovigilance data show that hexyl cinnamal causes allergic contact dermatitis in 0.5–2% of the general population and up to 5% of atopic dermatitis patients. Reactions typically present as itching, erythema, and vesicles at the application site. Not classified as phototoxic or as an endocrine disruptor. Patients with sensitive skin, atopic dermatitis, eczema, or prior contact dermatitis should look for 'Hexyl Cinnamal' on labels and avoid products containing it. Alternatives are fragrance-free formulations or products labeled as free from fragrance allergens.
