Hinoki leaf extract (Chamaecyparis Obtusa Leaf Extract, Japanese cypress) is obtained from hinoki leaves – a tree culturally important in Japan (timber in traditional architecture, in Shinto shrines). Composition. Essential oils – alpha-pinene, myrcene, limonene, cadinenes. Also flavonoids, triterpenoids. Where applied. Japanese and Korean cosmetics with k-beauty positioning, scented creams and hair products (0.1-1%). Natural antimicrobial agent. Evidence base. In vitro – mild antibacterial activity against S. aureus and C. acnes (Yang 2007). Few clinical RCTs. Safety. CIR has not made a separate assessment. Cypress essential oils may contain allergens including limonene and pinene. Patch-test reactions possible in fragrance-allergic patients. Pregnancy – safe topically at cosmetic concentrations. Lactation – no data.
