Barley seed extract (Hordeum Vulgare Seed Extract) is a water or glycol extract of barley grain. Contains beta-glucans, avenanthramides (related to oat), polysaccharides, minerals. Where applied. Soothing creams, sensitive-skin products, masks (0.5-3%). Marketed as moisturizing and anti-inflammatory. Evidence base. Beta-glucans as a class have been studied in atopic dermatitis and post-procedure recovery – Pillai 2005 showed barrier improvement over 8 weeks. For barley specifically clinical RCTs are few; data come from related oat extracts and universal beta-glucans. Safety. CIR confirmed safety. Oral barley is contraindicated in celiac patients, but topical gluten does not absorb through intact skin – no risk. Pregnancy and lactation – safe.
