Semi-synthetic polymer derived from cellulose. Used as a thickener, film-former, and emulsion stabiliser. In skincare it creates a pleasant gel texture without tackiness. The same polymer used in 'artificial tear' ophthalmic drops.
Topical application
BLimited evidence. One RCT or several controlled studies with limitations.
Functional thickener. No standalone active effect. One of the most studied polymers in pharma and cosmetics, with a favourable safety profile.
Hydroxypropyl Methylcellulose (HPMC, hypromellose) is a semi-synthetic polymer from plant cellulose. Tasteless, odorless, dissolves in cold water to a clear gel. Used not only in cosmetics but also in pharmacy – the same polymer is in ophthalmic "artificial tears" (Tears Naturale, Hypotears). Where applied. Thickener, film-former, and emulsion stabilizer in gels, serums, shampoos, conditioners, cleansers, mascaras (0.1-2%). Creates a pleasant gel texture without stickiness. In Spain in Avène Tolerance Extreme, La Roche-Posay Toleriane, Sesderma micellar waters. Safety. CIR rated HPMC safe at current cosmetic concentrations (2008, re-evaluated 2019). Inert, hypoallergenic, dampens skin reactions. Used in baby and post-op products. Pregnancy and lactation – safe topically and on mucous membranes. Suitable for all skin types. May feel slightly tight at high concentrations in oily-skin formulas – not from irritation but from its film-forming properties.
