Ester of salicylic acid with isodecyl alcohol. Emollient, solvent in SPF formulas. Does NOT have the exfoliating effect of regular salicylic acid.
Topical application
CWeak evidence. In vitro data, open-label studies, or expert consensus.
Safe emollient. Often used with octisalate and other UV filters as a solubilizer.
Isodecyl Salicylate is an ester of salicylic acid and isodecyl alcohol. Oily liquid, poorly water-soluble, well soluble in oils and silicones. Despite "salicylate" in the name, it lacks the exfoliating effect of regular salicylic acid – the ester bond does not release active salicylic acid in the stratum corneum. Where applied. Emollient and solvent in SPF formulas, lipsticks, eyeshadows, lip balms (1-10%). Often used as solvent for solid UV filters (Avobenzone, Tinosorb S, Octocrylene) that otherwise disperse poorly. In Spain in Vichy Capital Soleil, Avène Sun, Isdin Fotoprotector. Safety. CIR rated isodecyl salicylate safe at cosmetic concentrations (2003, re-evaluated 2018). EU SCCS has set no restrictions. Irritation and sensitization are rare. Not comedogenic. Pregnancy and lactation – safe topically. In patients with confirmed allergy to ASA (aspirin) and salicylates cross-reactivity is theoretically possible, but very rarely reported at cosmetic concentrations.
