Isoeugenol is an aromatic substance with the scent of clove and nutmeg. A natural component of clove, nutmeg, ylang-ylang, and bergamot essential oils. Often synthesized for perfumery. Where applied. Perfumery, aromatic candles, household chemistry, floral-spicy notes in eaux de toilette, body balms. In Spain – Loewe, Carolina Herrera, Adolfo Dominguez, Puig (classic perfume houses). Allergenicity. On the EU list of 26 mandatory-labeled fragrance allergens (Annex III Regulation 1223/2009). IVDK data: one of the strongest sensitizers in perfumery. Sensitization in 1.5-3% of dermatitis patients. ESCD keeps isoeugenol in the standard patch-test panel. Safety. SCCS 2010 (Opinion 1295/10) limited isoeugenol in leave-on products to 0.02% (a full cosmetic ban was initially planned). No limit in rinse-off, but package labeling is required at >100 ppm. IFRA also set strict limits by use category. Pregnancy and lactation – topical use at cosmetic concentrations is acceptable, no direct teratogenicity data. With confirmed sensitization – avoid. Alternatives: fragrance-free formulas, hypoallergenic fragrance.
