Leuconostoc/Radish Root Ferment Filtrate is a natural preservative – radish root filtrate fermented by Leuconostoc kimchii bacteria (used in traditional Korean kimchi). Contains antimicrobial peptides and lactic acid. Mechanism. Leuconostoc bacteriocins suppress growth of Gram-positive bacteria and fungi. Lactic acid lowers formula pH to 4–5, creating an unfavorable environment for most pathogens. Works as a natural alternative to parabens and phenoxyethanol. Where applied. Eco-cosmetics, sensitive-skin formulas, products with COSMOS and Ecocert certification. Concentrations 2–4%. Brands include Weleda, Pai Skincare, Naobay. Evidence base. Comparative preservation efficacy tests (Challenge Test, ISO 11930) show Leuconostoc ferment at 3% provides preservation equivalent to 1% phenoxyethanol in pH 4.5–5.5 formulas. In formulas with pH above 6 efficacy drops. Safety. CIR has not evaluated as a preservative separately, but the components (lactic acid, peptides) are safe at the stated concentrations. Allergy is rare. Pregnancy and lactation – safe. Applicable in baby cosmetics.
