Paraben with the lowest molecular weight and weakest estrogenic activity in the group. One of the most studied cosmetic preservatives. EU-permitted concentration up to 0.4%.
Topical application
DVery weak or conflicting data.
A preservative, not an active ingredient. SCCS and CIR assessed methylparaben as safe at regulated concentrations. In vitro estrogenic activity is 10,000–100,000 times weaker than estradiol – clinically insignificant at cosmetic use levels.
Methylparaben is the methyl ester of para-hydroxybenzoic acid, the shortest-chain member of the paraben family. One of the oldest cosmetic preservatives. Mechanism. Suppresses fungal and Gram-positive bacterial growth by disrupting cell membranes and inhibiting enzymes. On its own weaker than medium- and long-chain parabens (ethyl-, propyl-, butyl-), so usually used in blends. Where applied. Creams, lotions, shampoos, shower gels, foundations, mascaras. EU Regulation 1223/2009 concentration – up to 0.4% alone, up to 0.8% as the sum of all parabens. Evidence base. SCCS confirmed safety of methylparaben at maximum concentrations (Opinion SCCS/1514/13). Unlike propyl- and butylparaben, no significant estrogen-like activity has been shown. Methylparaben does not need to be removed from cosmetics. Controversy. Parabens have been discussed since 2004 – the Darbre study found parabens in breast cancer tumor tissue. A correlation, not causation: parabens have not been classified as carcinogens. SCCS, FDA, AEMPS confirm safety of methylparaben. The marketing "paraben-free" trend is more commercial than scientifically justified for short-chain parabens. Safety. Very rare contact allergies (0.1–0.4% in the general population, Uter 2018). Does not photosensitize. Non-comedogenic. Pregnancy and lactation – per SCCS safe at approved concentrations.

The Evigrade extension adds an evidence panel to Wildberries, Goldapple, Letu, iHerb, Sephora and 12 more stores. This ingredient and every other one in the product show evidence-tier, allergen risk and pregnancy/lactation flags at a glance.
Methylparaben is considered safe during pregnancy at typical cosmetic concentrations. Systemic absorption through the skin is minimal.
