INCI: Fruit Extract
A collective label under which the manufacturer may include various fruit extract mixes. Without specification of which fruits are included, activity and risks cannot be assessed. Often used as a marketing ingredient for a 'natural' positioning.
Topical application
FNo evidence or proven inefficacy for this route of administration.
Without a specific composition, assessment is impossible. Under EU Regulation 1223/2009 manufacturers must list specific species in the INCI, but the generic 'Fruit Extract' still appears in practice. Ask the manufacturer for the specific composition.
Mixed Fruit Extract is a generic INCI label for blends of several fruit extracts: apple, lemon, grape, orange, grapefruit, pineapple, papaya, pomegranate, and others. Exact blend composition, active concentrations, and extraction method (aqueous, glycolic, ethanolic) are not required to be disclosed – they are proprietary. Most blends contain AHAs (lactic, malic, citric, tartaric, glycolic acids), polyphenols, anthocyanins, vitamin C, and enzymes (bromelain from pineapple, papain from papaya). Used in exfoliants, brightening serums, toners, masks, and antioxidant products at 1–10%. Claimed effects: gentle exfoliation, tone evening, antioxidant protection. In practice, the opacity of the composition makes it hard to predict the effect of any specific product – formula pH, acid bioavailability, and enzyme stability vary widely. Use with caution or avoid in markedly sensitive or compromised skin, rosacea, active acne, perioral dermatitis. Avoid combining with retinoids, azelaic acid, or benzoyl peroxide in the same routine due to increased irritation risk.
