Damask rose petal extract (Rosa Damascena Flower Extract) is an extract from petals of the Damascus rose variety, traditionally grown in Bulgaria (Rose Valley), Turkey, Iran, Morocco. Contains flavonoids (quercetin, kaempferol), polyphenols (gallic acid), essential oils (geraniol, citronellol, nerol). Where applied. Toners, mists, creams with 'rose' cosmetic marketing (0.5-5%), premium lines. In Spain – in niche natural and perfume brands. Often marketed as a fragrance-active; in reality the primary function is olfactory. Evidence base. In vitro damask rose polyphenols show antioxidant and anti-inflammatory action in cell cultures. Topical clinical RCTs in humans are essentially absent. The antioxidant potential is a marketing claim not confirmed by independent clinical data. Safety. EU CosIng permits use. Allergenic potential is medium – damask rose contains geraniol and citronellol from the EU 26-allergen mandatory disclosure list (Regulation EC 1223/2009). In some perfume-allergic people it causes contact dermatitis. Extract vs hydrosol controversy. 'Rose water' (rose water) and 'rose extract' are not synonyms. The hydrosol is a by-product of essential oil distillation with minimal active content. The extract is obtained by ethanol or glycol extraction. Marketing often blurs these terms. Pregnancy and lactation – topically safe at moderate concentrations. Damask rose essential oil (a separate product) – use with caution in pregnancy due to theoretical uterine tone effect at high doses. Cosmetic extracts at ordinary concentrations have no restrictions.
