Plant extract from Saxifraga sarmentosa, popular in K-beauty. Contains arbutin and bergenin – antioxidants with brightening potential in vitro. Few clinical RCTs of topical use in humans. Safe, but standalone activity has weak evidence – cautious 'uncertain'.
Topical application
CWeak evidence. In vitro data, open-label studies, or expert consensus.
Antioxidant and brightening activity confirmed in vitro and in animal models. In humans – single open-label studies by K-beauty brands without independent replication. Weak evidence base.
Strawberry geranium extract (Saxifraga Sarmentosa Extract) is an extract from the aerial parts of strawberry begonia, an Asian ornamental plant. Contains arbutin (a natural hydroquinone glycoside), bergenin, flavonoids, phenolic acids. Where applied. In K-beauty products with 'brightening' marketing (0.1-2%), in serums for pigmentation, in products claiming 'natural arbutin', in anti-aging formulas. On the Spanish market – in niche K-beauty online stores and individual Korean brands in large department stores. Evidence base. Pure arbutin inhibits tyrosinase and reduces melanin synthesis (Sarkar 2013, review). Pure 2% arbutin efficacy is comparable to 2-4% hydroquinone with less irritation. Arbutin concentration in saxifraga extract is low (often <10% of total extract mass), so the expected pigmentation effect is weaker than with isolated arbutin in a formula. Few topical clinical RCTs specifically of saxifraga extract in humans. Bergenin – less studied component. In vitro shows antioxidant activity and melanogenesis inhibition potential. Clinical relevance not confirmed. Safety. EU CosIng permits use. Allergic reactions are rare. Arbutin at cosmetic concentrations does not cause the complications that pure hydroquinone does (ochronosis, postinflammatory pigmentation). With long-term use of high saxifraga extract concentrations a weak conversion to hydroquinone is theoretically possible, but no clinically meaningful cases described. Pregnancy and lactation – use with caution. Due to theoretical similarity to hydroquinone (avoided in pregnancy) manufacturers label CAUTION for all arbutin-containing products. No data on lactation – safer not to apply on breast skin.

Saxifraga Sarmentosa Extract should be used with caution during pregnancy. Consulting a dermatologist or OB-GYN is advisable.
