Choline: adequate intake
Choline is required for acetylcholine synthesis, membrane phospholipids and methylation. The Adequate Intake (AI) per IOM/NAS is 550 mg/day for men and 425 mg/day for women, 450 mg during pregnancy and 550 mg during lactation. This is an AI, not an RDA – it is derived from average intake estimates, not from clinical endpoints. Deficiency is rare: total parenteral nutrition, PEMT genetic variants, severe steatohepatitis. In most healthy adults a usual diet with eggs, liver and legumes meets requirements.

How to read tiers A–F

- BRecommended in selected cases
- CStudy data contradict each other
- DBenefit not proven, no documented harm
- FDocumented harm, or risk without benefit
