ICD-10 A592 drugs
Drugs used for this condition
- AMetronidazoleFirst line · Imidazole derivatives (antiprotozoal / antibacterial)First-line for trichomoniasis in men and women per CDC STI Treatment Guidelines 2021 and WHO. Preferred regimen in women: 500 mg twice daily for 7 days. Single 2 g dose is less effective in women (CDC downgraded in 2021); still acceptable in men. Mandatory simultaneous partner treatment. Sexual contact no sooner than 7 days after both partners complete therapy.
- ATinidazoleFirst line · Antiprotozoal and antibacterial, 5-nitroimidazole derivativeTinidazole is first-line for trichomoniasis in vaginitis and male partner, given as a single 2 g oral dose. SEIMC and CDC equate tinidazole with metronidazole, preferring tinidazole in metronidazole-resistant strains. Partner treatment is mandatory to prevent reinfection.
How to read tiers A–F
Evidence tiers belong to the drug-indication pair, not to the drug as a whole: the same substance can be A for one condition and F for another.
- AStrong evidence – first or second line in international guidelines
- BRecommended in selected cases
- CStudy data contradict each other
- DBenefit not proven, no documented harm
- FDocumented harm, or risk without benefit
