Mechanism
Azithromycin has minimal effect on CYP3A4 (unlike clarithromycin and erythromycin). No clinically significant reduction in ethinylestradiol levels has been reported.
Symptoms
The combination usually causes no specific symptoms. Each drug's individual side effects remain.
Management
Additional contraception during short azithromycin courses (3–5 days) is not needed. In women on combined oral contraceptives with respiratory or urogenital infections, azithromycin remains an antibiotic of choice.
