Anaferon (anti-human interferon gamma antibodies in homeopathic dilutions)

Homeopathic medicines

ATC code: V03AX-ANAFERON (Anti-IFN-γ antibodies in homeopathic dilutions (local code))

Mechanism of action

The manufacturer claims the use of high dilutions (C12, C30, C50) of affinity-purified antibodies against human interferon-gamma. At these dilutions the number of active molecules approaches or reaches zero (Avogadro's number), making the proposed mechanism of action pharmacologically implausible. Homeopathic products are methodologically incompatible with evidence-based medicine.

Indications

F

Acute respiratory viral infection

Not recommended

Anaferon and its variants for the treatment or prevention of viral URI are not mentioned in international sources. Systematic reviews of homeopathy effectiveness (notably the 2015 NHMRC report from the Australian National Health and Medical Research Council) found no convincing evidence of clinical efficacy for homeopathic products in any condition.

F

Influenza

Not recommended

For the treatment or prevention of influenza in adults and children, not mentioned in international guidelines. Proven antiviral options are neuraminidase inhibitors (oseltamivir, zanamivir) and baloxavir. The cornerstone of prevention is annual vaccination.

Practical notes

A critical review of the homeopathic class is available in the NHMRC Australia reports and the official position of the European Academies Science Advisory Council (EASAC) from 2017.
