Benzyl Alcohol is an aromatic alcohol, a natural component of jasmine, ylang-ylang essential oils, and benzoin gum. In cosmetics and pharmaceuticals it is used as a solvent, a mild preservative, and a fragrance component. Mechanism. At 0.5–1% it inhibits growth of gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria, yeasts, and moulds by disrupting cell membranes. Often paired with phenoxyethanol, dehydroacetate, and sorbic acid to widen preservation spectrum. As a solvent it helps incorporate poorly soluble actives into the formula. Where applied. Shampoos, shower gels, lotions, face and body creams, fragrances, prescription ointments, injectable formulations as a preservative. Cosmetic concentration 0.5–1%; EU Cosmetics Regulation Annex V cap is 1%. In Spain part of La Roche-Posay, Avène, ISDIN, Mustela, Sesderma. Safety. CIR and SCCS confirm cosmetic safety. Listed among the EU's 26 mandatory fragrance allergens – at over 0.001% in leave-on and 0.01% in rinse-off, label declaration is required. Allergic contact reactions in 1–2% of patients with eczema and atopic dermatitis. In newborns, systemic use (injections) at high doses has caused 'gasping syndrome' – not relevant to topical cosmetics. Pregnancy – use with caution. Topically at cosmetic concentrations systemic absorption is minimal and the risk is purely theoretical. AEMPS and SEGO do not ban it, but pregnant patients with a fragrance-allergy history should pick products without benzyl alcohol. No restrictions during lactation. Functional role. An adjunct preservative and solvent, not a cosmetic active. No standalone skin benefit.
