Film-forming polymer that creates a water-resistant film on the skin. Widely used in sunscreens to improve water resistance and even distribution of UV filters.
Topical application
DVery weak or conflicting data.
Auxiliary film-forming polymer. Biologically inert. CIR confirmed safety in cosmetic use. No therapeutic activity – serves to improve sunscreen formula properties.
Acrylates Copolymer is a synthetic film-forming polymer made by copolymerizing acrylic and methacrylic acids. Used in cosmetics in aqueous and aqueous-silicone systems for water and sweat resistance. Mechanism. After solvent evaporation the copolymer forms a thin hydrophobic film on the skin. The film is elastic and gas-permeable, locking UV filters and pigments in place against water and sweat. Functions as a fixative and water-resistant base. Where applied. Water-resistant sunscreens (0.5–3%), foundations, primers, hair sprays, water-resistant makeup. Standard in SPF 30+ sunscreens by Bioderma Photoderm, La Roche-Posay Anthelios, Isdin Fotoprotector, Heliocare. Safety. CIR confirmed safety in 2002 at cosmetic concentrations. The molecule is too large to penetrate the epidermis, so no systemic action. Hypoallergenic, non-comedogenic, non-irritating. Pregnancy and lactation – safe. Acceptable at any stage; acrylates-copolymer sunscreens are an optimal choice for gestational melasma. Environmental controversy. Acrylates Copolymer is synthetic, water-insoluble, and not readily biodegradable. It reaches wastewater and the sea after rinse-off. Europe expanded microplastic restrictions from 2023 (EU Regulation 2023/2055). Brands are gradually switching to biodegradable alternatives (silica, biodegradable polymers). Functional role. No standalone skin benefit.

Acrylates Copolymer is considered safe during pregnancy at typical cosmetic concentrations. Systemic absorption through the skin is minimal.
