N-acetylcarnosine (INCI: N-Acetylcarnosine) is an acetylated derivative of the dipeptide carnosine, more stable than the free form. In cosmetics it is used as an antioxidant: it helps curb free-radical damage and protein glycation, processes tied to skin aging. On efficacy a caveat is fair: most N-acetylcarnosine data come from ophthalmology, not skin. As a topical antioxidant it makes sense in a support role, but skin-specific dermatological evidence is thin. The reasonable view is a supporting ingredient within an antioxidant formula, with no promise of visible results on its own. Applied topically it has no systemic significance, so it can be used in pregnancy and breastfeeding. Tolerance is good. Irritation and allergy potential are low and it suits sensitive skin.
