Naringenin (INCI: Naringenin) is a flavonoid found in citrus, mostly grapefruit. In cosmetics it is used as an antioxidant: it scavenges free radicals and helps support the skin's defense against oxidative stress, which contributes to an even tone. On efficacy, this is a supporting ingredient. Flavonoids have a solid antioxidant basis in vitro, but clinical data on skin are still limited, so do not expect action on the level of retinol or stabilized vitamin C. It adds to an antioxidant formula rather than carrying it alone. Applied topically it has no systemic significance, so it can be used in pregnancy and breastfeeding. Tolerance is good. Irritation and allergy potential are low and it suits sensitive skin. At cosmetic concentrations reactions are rare.
