Blend of medium-chain fatty alcohols. Does NOT dry the skin: fatty alcohols act as emollients and co-emulsifiers, unlike ethanol.
Topical application
BLimited evidence. One RCT or several controlled studies with limitations.
Fatty alcohols with C12-16 chain. Well tolerated, typical emollient in creams. Not to be confused with short-chain alcohols (ethanol, isopropyl) which may dry the skin.
C12-16 Alcohols are a mid-length fatty alcohol blend (lauryl C12, myristyl C14, cetyl C16). Usually plant-derived from coconut and palm oil. Not to be confused with ethanol and short-chain alcohols that dry the skin. Mechanism. On skin they work as softening emollients and co-emulsifiers. The long lipophilic chain embeds into intercellular stratum corneum lipids and reinforces the barrier. In formula they give creams a dense pleasant texture and stabilise emulsions. Where applied. Creams, lotions, hair conditioners, shampoos (as foam aids), shaving products, lipsticks. Concentration 1–10%. In Spain in La Roche-Posay Toleriane, Avène Cold Cream, ISDIN, Bioderma. Safety. CIR confirmed safety of the C12-C22 fatty alcohol family in cosmetics in 2018. Hypoallergenic, non-comedogenic (despite lauryl alcohol content – in a blended form comedogenicity is low). Irritation and contact allergy are isolated. Pregnancy and lactation – safe. Used without restriction. A common misconception. Many users confuse C12-C22 fatty alcohols with ethanol ('alcohol denat.', 'alcohol') and fear a drying effect. In fact, fatty alcohols do not dry – they soften and support the barrier. 'Cetyl Alcohol', 'Cetearyl Alcohol', 'Lauryl Alcohol', 'C12-16 Alcohols' on a label are emollients, not drying agents. Functional role. Formula emollients and co-emulsifiers. No standalone activity as a cosmetic active.
