That change lets it sit in the oil phase and come closer to the skin's lipid barrier. In a formula it acts as a humectant. On efficacy, it is a supporting component in hydration. It holds water like classic hyaluronate, with the advantage of being oil-soluble, which helps its spread in formulas containing oils. Data specific to this variant are limited, so it is realistic to expect good surface hydration. Applied topically it has no systemic relevance, so it can be used during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Tolerance is good, with low irritation and allergy potential, suitable for sensitive skin. Already-sensitized people may see an occasional reaction, though most do not.
