2,3-Butanediol (INCI: 2,3-Butanediol) is a multifunctional glycol. In a formula it hydrates by holding water, improves feel and reinforces the preservative system, helping other preservatives work at lower doses. It combines functional roles: a supporting humectant and a preservation booster. It is not an active that corrects wrinkles or pigmentation; it gives the formula comfort and stability. Topically its systemic relevance is negligible, so it can be used during pregnancy and breastfeeding without restriction. Tolerance is good. Irritation and allergy potential are low, suitable for sensitive skin. Glycols of this type rarely cause problems, are not linked to clogged pores, and in most people cause no reaction.
