Caprylyl Glycol (1,2-octanediol) is a multifunctional cosmetic ingredient. It acts simultaneously as a mild humectant, skin and hair conditioner, and preservative booster. Produced synthetically or from plant sources (coconut, palm kernel). Mechanism. A humectant with light lipophilic affinity – retains moisture in the stratum corneum while penetrating lipids. Antimicrobial effect – disrupts the membrane of gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria and fungi. Not a stand-alone preservative (not on the EU 1223/2009 approved list) but boosts phenoxyethanol, benzyl alcohol, and organic acids. Where applied. Creams, serums, toners, micellar waters at 0.5-1.5%. Often paired with phenoxyethanol and ethylhexylglycerin (Optiphen complex by Schülke). In Spain – background in most mass and pharmacy products (CeraVe, Eucerin, La Roche-Posay). Evidence base. The 2008 CIR review confirmed safety of caprylyl glycol up to 5% in leave-on products. Manufacturer Symrise provides MIC comparisons on 50 strains – the antimicrobial profile is moderately broad. Safety. CIR – safe at use concentrations (up to 5%). Hypoallergenic. Irritation possible above 2% in very sensitive skin – mild stinging. Non-comedogenic, non-photosensitizing. Pregnancy and lactation – safe. Acceptable at any stage. One of the preferred components in phenoxyethanol-free clean-beauty formulas. What to combine with. Universal – compatible with any actives (retinol, AHA/BHA, niacinamide, vitamin C). Standard background component in modern formulas.
