Caprylic/Capric Glycerides are a blend of mono-, di- and triglycerides of caprylic (C8) and capric (C10) fatty acids from coconut or palm kernel oil. A light emollient with high biocompatibility. Mechanism. Fills the intercellular space of the stratum corneum, restores the lipid barrier, reduces transepidermal water loss. Medium-chain triglycerides (MCT) penetrate faster than long-chain ones, so the formula leaves no greasy film. In a formulation they also act as solvents for oil-soluble actives (retinol, tocopherol, CoQ10) and as penetration enhancers. Where applied. Serums, creams, cleansing oils, twin-phase makeup removers, baby skincare. In Spain – in Bioderma Sensibio, La Roche-Posay Toleriane, Mustela for infants, Suavinex. Evidence base. The emollient and barrier properties of the MCT fraction have been studied for decades; van Smeden 2014 showed their role in lipid matrix restructuring in dry skin. Used as nutritional support in enteral feeding, which confirms biocompatibility. Safety. CIR in 2008 confirmed safety of the blend for topical use at cosmetic concentrations. Non-irritating, non-sensitizing, comedogenicity rating 1 from most suppliers. Suitable for sensitive skin, including children and atopic dermatitis. Pregnancy and lactation – safe. No restrictions, including around nipples and newborn skin folds. Best suited to: dry, dehydrated, sensitive skin, atopic dermatitis, post-procedure care. For oily acne-prone skin – use in low-oil formulations; locally well-tolerated.
