Red algae extract (Irish moss) with carrageenans. Moisturizing film-former that gives skin a smoothed feel.
Topical application
CWeak evidence. In vitro data, open-label studies, or expert consensus.
Humectant and film-forming effect. Safe.
Chondrus Crispus Extract (Irish moss) is an extract of the red algae Chondrus crispus. Main active components: carrageenans (sulfated galactans), polysaccharides, minerals (iodine, calcium, magnesium, potassium), B vitamins. Where applied. Hydrating serums and creams, masks, marine-spa products. Extract concentration 0.1-3%. In Spain – Talasso Spa Cosmetics, Sesderma Atopises, ISDIN Hydration Lipidic Anti-Aging. Mechanism. Carrageenans form a skin film – retain moisture, give smoothness and tone. In formula they also act as thickener and stabilizer. Polysaccharides bind water 100-1000 times their weight. Mild anti-inflammatory effect described in vitro. Evidence base. RCTs on topical chondrus extract are scarce. In vitro studies show antioxidant activity and stimulation of filaggrin synthesis in keratinocytes (Berthon 2017). Clinically the effect does not exceed standard film-forming humectants (hyaluronic acid, glycerin). Carrageenan controversy. EFSA in 2018 revisited dietary carrageenans: food additives (E407, E407a) are safe at usual doses, but degraded carrageenan (poligeenan) is a carcinogen (IARC Group 2B). Cosmetic concentrations do not use degraded carrageenan; risks are minimal. The controversy is about food, not cosmetic use. Safety. CIR has not issued a dedicated review, but cosmetic carrageenans have been used for decades without systemic toxicity reports. Allergic reactions are rare, described in iodine-allergic and seafood-allergic patients. Does not photosensitize. Pregnancy and lactation – safe topically. Acceptable at any stage. Oral food supplements with carrageenan are better avoided (theoretical gut inflammation risk per in vitro data). Suitable for. Dry, dehydrated, normal skin. In thalassotherapy products. Iodine-allergic and seafood-allergic patients – use with caution.
