Citrus Aurantium Amara Flower Water, also called neroli water or orange flower water, is the aromatic hydrosol obtained as a by-product of steam distillation of bitter orange blossoms. The same distillation produces neroli essential oil; the water phase keeps water-soluble aromatic molecules and trace amounts of essential oil. In cosmetics, the hydrosol is used as a humectant base, a natural fragrance, and a sensory uplift in toners, mists, lotions, and serums. Typical concentration range is 5-30%. As a base it can fully or partially replace water in clean-formula products that aim to skip synthetic fragrance. Pregnancy safety. Orange flower water is considered safe during pregnancy in topical use. Trace essential oil content is too low to produce systemic effects. The hydrosol does not contain phototoxic furocoumarins of bitter orange peel and is not photosensitizing. Allergen status. Medium. The hydrosol contains small amounts of linalool, limonene, and geraniol, which the EU Cosmetic Regulation lists as fragrance allergens above declaration thresholds. People with confirmed fragrance allergies should perform a patch test before use. Skin compatibility. Suits normal, dry, and combination skin. Sensitive and rosacea-prone skin should approach with caution because of the natural fragrance load. The hydrosol does not soothe or treat rosacea. There is no evidence that orange flower water has anti-aging, anti-acne, or barrier-repair functions beyond hydration. It is a sensory ingredient, not an active. Bottom line.
