Diphenylsiloxy Phenyl Trimethicone is a phenyl-modified silicone with a high refractive index (1.55-1.58 vs 1.40 for regular dimethicone). Because of its optical properties the molecule reflects light in a particular way and gives a 'glow' finish on skin and hair. Mechanism. On skin it works as a functional emollient with an optical effect. The high refractive index is close to that of skin, which gives a natural non-plastic shine. Doesn't form a long-lasting occlusive film. In formulas it works as a solvent for oil-soluble actives, pigment carrier, sensory modifier. Where applied. Glow primers, foundations, lip and cheek products, 'highlighter' creams, hair products with a 'mirror shine' finish. In Spain – Charlotte Tilbury Hollywood Flawless Filter, NARS Pure Radiant, MAC Strobe Cream, professional color cosmetics. Evidence base. A functional component. Optical and sensory characteristics confirmed in standard formulation tests. No active skin pharmacology – a purely aesthetic component. Safety. CIR confirmed phenyl-modified trimethicones safe in cosmetic use. Hypoallergenic, non-comedogenic, non-irritating. Normal safety profile. Pregnancy and lactation – safe. Systemic absorption through intact skin is low. Best suited to: any skin type. Especially interesting in color cosmetics for a 'healthy glowing skin' effect, in mature-skin products, and in 'soft focus' positioned products.
