Prebiotic polysaccharide from chicory root. Feeds beneficial skin microbiome bacteria and holds moisture.
Topical application
CWeak evidence. In vitro data, open-label studies, or expert consensus.
Small studies show growth of commensal staphylococci after application. Tolerates well on sensitive skin.
Inulin is a prebiotic polysaccharide from chicory or agave root. Structurally a fructan – a chain of fructose residues. In food industry it serves as fiber and sugar substitute; entered cosmetics in the 2010s as a "prebiotic for skin microbiome". Mechanism. Does not feed the skin directly but is a substrate for beneficial microbiome bacteria (Lactobacillus, Bifidobacterium). On skin it theoretically supports microbiota diversity and reduces growth of opportunistic pathogens (Staphylococcus aureus in atopic dermatitis, Cutibacterium acnes in acne). Additionally a mild humectant binding water. Where applied. Creams, serums, face washes, deodorants, atopic-skin products (0.1-3%). In Spain in La Roche-Posay Lipikar (for atopy), Bioderma Atoderm, Eucerin AtopiControl, Sesderma Atopises. Evidence base. RCTs on topical inulin in atopic dermatitis patients: Glatz 2018 (50 children, 8 weeks) – improved SCORAD index and reduced SCORAD itch. No direct comparisons with other moisturizers. On healthy skin studies show mild barrier function improvement (Pinto 2017). Safety. CIR has not made a separate assessment. ESCD does not list it as a frequent allergen. Irritation and sensitization are rare. Pregnancy and lactation – safe topically. Suitable for all skin types, especially atopic, sensitive, post-procedure.

The Evigrade extension adds an evidence panel to Wildberries, Goldapple, Letu, iHerb, Sephora and 12 more stores. This ingredient and every other one in the product show evidence-tier, allergen risk and pregnancy/lactation flags at a glance.
Inulin is considered safe during pregnancy at typical cosmetic concentrations. Systemic absorption through the skin is minimal.
