Iscotrizinol (Diethylhexyl Butamido Triazone, trade name Uvasorb HEB by Merck) is a highly photostable UVB filter. Developed by Merck in the 2000s, approved in EU since 2002 (Regulation 1223/2009 Annex VI), max 10%. Mechanism. Absorbs UVB (290-320 nm) peaking at 312 nm. High molecular weight (765 Da) – stays on skin surface, does not enter bloodstream. Lipid-soluble. Pairs well with broad-spectrum UVA filters (Tinosorb S/M, Mexoryl XL, Uvinul A Plus) for broad-spectrum protection. Where applied. Day creams with SPF, sunscreens, anti-aging formulas, water-resistant sunscreens. In Spain in Isdin Fotoprotector Fusion Water, Heliocare 360°, La Roche-Posay Anthelios. Often combined with Uvinul T 150 and Tinosorb S. Evidence base. SCCS 2005 (Opinion SCCNFP/0876/05) confirmed high photostability (>90% activity retention after 25 MED UV). Does not degrade in light, does not form toxic metabolites. SPF efficacy confirmed in instrumental in vitro and in vivo tests. Safety. CIR did not evaluate (filter registered in EU, not US). EU SCCS confirmed safety up to 10%. Minimal systemic absorption, no hormonal disruption (unlike oxybenzone and octinoxate), non-allergenic, non-comedogenic. EWG rates as a "safer" alternative to older filters. Pregnancy and lactation – safe topically. Suitable for all skin types, especially sensitive and photosensitive skin.
