Topical application
DVery weak or conflicting data.
Marketing-driven plant extract. Contains iodine, which could theoretically affect thyroid function with systemic exposure, but no clinically significant effects have been described from topical use at standard concentrations.
Kelp Extract (Laminaria digitata / Laminaria saccharina Extract) is an extract from brown seaweed of the Laminariaceae family. Grows in cold Atlantic and Pacific waters. Contains alginates, fucoidan, iodine, minerals (magnesium, calcium, iron), B-group vitamins. Where applied. Moisturizing creams, masks, serums, cellulite and body-contouring formulas (0.1-5%). In Spain in La Mer (Crème de la Mer – fermented Macrocystis pyrifera extract), Natura Bissé Marine, Aqua Marina, Talgo and Phytomer thalassotherapy. Evidence base. In vitro – antioxidant activity, tyrosinase and matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) inhibition by fucoidan. Direct clinical RCTs on topical kelp extract on skin are few; small studies show mild hydration. Marketing claims of "detox," "slimming," and "cellulite removal" with topical use are unproven. Safety. CIR has not made a separate assessment. High iodine content is theoretically concerning in thyroid disorders – but topical iodine absorption is clinically insignificant. Allergic reactions are rare, possible in patients allergic to iodine or seafood. Pregnancy – use with caution in patients with hyperthyroidism or on L-thyroxine. Lactation – use with caution for the same reason. In healthy people safe topically at cosmetic concentrations.
