INCI: Vitis Vinifera Fruit Extract
Grape fruit extract. Contains resveratrol, proanthocyanidins and polyphenols – antioxidants with confirmed in vitro activity. At concentrations typical for cosmetics (<1%), the clinical skin effect is modest. Safe, hypoallergenic.
Topical application
CWeak evidence. In vitro data, open-label studies, or expert consensus.
Antioxidant profile confirmed in vitro. Clinical RCTs of topical resveratrol show a mild effect on pigmentation and fine lines with long-term use.
Vitis Vinifera Fruit Extract is an extract from grape berries. Contains resveratrol, proanthocyanidins, quercetin, anthocyanins, tartaric acid, phenolic acids – a polyphenol group with confirmed in vitro antioxidant activity. Mechanism. Grape polyphenols neutralise free radicals and suppress NF-κB activation, reducing inflammation. Resveratrol activates SIRT1 – a cellular longevity gene. In vitro it suppresses MMP-1 (collagenase) and stimulates collagen synthesis in fibroblasts. Clinical effects at cosmetic concentrations are modest – most studies are on oral forms. Where applied. Caudalie – a Spanish-French brand built entirely on grape polyphenols. Common in Spain: Caudalie Vinosource, Sesderma Resveraderm, La Roche-Posay Anthelios with grape extract. Use levels: 0.1-1%. Evidence base. In vitro – robust. Few clinical RCTs with 'wrinkle reduction' endpoints for topical use exist. Buonocore 2012 in an open study of 60 women showed improved firmness and radiance over 6 months of 1% resveratrol complex use. Safety. CIR confirmed safety. Sensitises rarely, non-comedogenic. Rare allergy possible in patients with oral grape reactions. Pregnancy and lactation – safe. Topical systemic absorption is minimal. Suited for. Mature skin with photoageing signs, anti-ageing prevention in young patients, eczema and rosacea (mild anti-inflammatory effect).
