Agave Americana Stem Extract is an extract of the American agave stem. Contains fructans (inulin, agavins), saponins, and flavonoids. Food industry uses agave for syrup; cosmetics use a stem extract after fermentation. Claimed mechanism. Marketed as a humectant and soothing ingredient: fructans bind water (humectant), saponins are mild surfactants. Human clinical study is minimal. In vitro shows modest antioxidant activity and elastase inhibition – no meaningful clinical endpoints on skin. Where applied. K-beauty and eco-cosmetics, anti-aging serums and creams with 'Mexican superfood' marketing, cleansing gels. Concentration 0.1–1%. Evidence base. Weak. No direct RCTs with endpoints (wrinkles, hydration, elasticity). The main argument is in vitro antioxidant activity and traditional Mexican folk use. Safety. CIR has not assessed it individually. Contact allergies possible in patients allergic to agaves and asphodels. High-saponin formulas may irritate mucosa – keep away from eyes and nasal mucosa. Pregnancy and lactation – use with caution. No direct data. Oral agave (juice, syrup) is safe in pregnancy, but topical cosmetic application without full assessment is best avoided without need. Realistic take. A marketing-driven botanical with plausible mechanism and weak clinical base. If the overall formula is solid, agave extract is a neutral add-on.
