Althaea Rosea Flower Extract (hollyhock) is an extract from the flowers of a perennial Malvaceae plant. Contains mucilaginous polysaccharides, anthocyanins, tannins, flavonoids. Mechanism. Mucilaginous polysaccharides form a thin film on the skin, hold water (humectant), and soften the sensation of tightness. Anthocyanins and flavonoids give modest antioxidant effect. Anti-inflammatory action via NF-κB suppression (in vitro). Where applied. Creams and masks for sensitive skin, toners, eye-area products. Extract concentration 0.5–3%. Common in atopic- and reactive-skin lines and in eco-cosmetics. Evidence base. Few human RCTs with endpoints. The main argument is traditional European herbal use and in vitro antioxidant activity. Safety. CIR has not assessed it individually. Hypoallergenic, non-irritating, non-comedogenic. Contact dermatitis is very rare. Pregnancy and lactation – use with caution. No direct data. Safer pregnancy alternatives with better evidence: aloe vera, centella, allantoin, panthenol. Realistic take. A mild botanical ingredient with weak evidence. A neutral add-on to a sensitive-skin formula.
