Antioxidant potential confirmed in vitro. Clinical data for topical anti-age effects are limited to small studies.
Vitis Vinifera Seed Extract is an extract from grape seeds. Rich in oligomeric proanthocyanidins (OPC) – a polyphenol group with antioxidant activity 20-50 times stronger than vitamin C in vitro. Also contains resveratrol (lower than in the skin), quercetin, catechins. Mechanism. OPC bind free radicals, inhibit lipid peroxidation, stabilise collagen and elastin. Mild astringent effect via tannins. In vitro they suppress MMP-1 and MMP-9 (collagenases) activation. Where applied. Caudalie Vinosource (central brand ingredient), Sesderma Resveraderm Antiox, anti-ageing serums and creams. In Spain – widely in Caudalie, Skeyndor, Mesoestetic. Use levels: 0.1-2%. Evidence base. Pataki 2002 RCT in 28 patients over 8 weeks of OPC use showed reduced wrinkle depth and improved firmness. Head-to-head comparisons with vitamin C or retinol have not been done. Most data come from oral forms in varicose disease (Cochrane 2019 – moderate evidence base). Safety. CIR confirmed safety. Sensitises rarely, non-comedogenic. Tannins above 3% can cause tightness and dryness – not recommended for sensitive skin. Pregnancy and lactation – safe. Topical systemic absorption is minimal. Suited for. Mature skin, anti-ageing prevention, photoprotective support (as a sunscreen add-on), mild anti-ageing for those who do not tolerate retinoids.
