An ashwagandha root extract. It works as an antioxidant; the maker links it to protecting skin from stress, independent data are limited. Well tolerated.
Topical application
BLimited evidence. One RCT or several controlled studies with limitations.
An antioxidant plant extract. Safe; independent data limited.
Ashwagandha root extract (INCI Withania Somnifera Root Extract) comes from a plant used in Ayurvedic medicine. In cosmetics it is used as a plant antioxidant and framed around skin stress, in anti-aging and soothing products. The antioxidant side has a reasonable basis: the plant contains compounds that neutralize free radicals. The stress-protection and anti-aging story is pushed mainly by the maker, and independent skin data is scarce. Treat it as a support antioxidant, not as an active with proven efficacy. Applied topically it is not systemically relevant, so in cosmetics it can be used during pregnancy and breastfeeding without issue, unlike the oral supplement, which is in fact advised against. Tolerability is good. Irritation and allergy potential are both low, suitable for sensitive skin. There is no data on relevant comedogenicity.
