Boerhavia diffusa root extract (INCI Boerhavia Diffusa Root Extract) comes from the root of a plant known in Ayurvedic tradition as punarnava. In a formula it works as a botanical soothing ingredient: it contains flavonoids and other phytochemicals credited with easing irritation and supporting the skin's barrier function. On efficacy this is a supporting botanical ingredient. Most data on boerhavia comes from traditional use and preclinical work, while the evidence base for cosmetic skin action is modest. Realistically expect a mild soothing contribution to a formula. Used topically the extract has no systemic relevance, so it can be used during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Oral intake is a separate matter and does not apply to cosmetic use. Tolerance is good. The irritation and allergy potential is low, which suits sensitive skin. Most people show no reaction.
