Willowherb extract (INCI Epilobium Angustifolium Flower/Leaf/Stem Extract) comes from the flowers, leaves and stems of fireweed. In a formula it works as a soothing ingredient: it contains tannins and the polyphenol oenothein B, credited with reducing redness and supporting sensitive, reactivity-prone skin. On efficacy this is a supporting botanical ingredient with a decent reputation in products for redness-prone and rosacea skin. Some lab data shows anti-inflammatory activity, but clinical studies are limited, so realistically expect a mild soothing contribution to a formula. Used topically the extract has no systemic relevance, so it can be used during pregnancy and breastfeeding without restriction. Tolerance is good. The irritation and allergy potential is low, which suits sensitive and rosacea-prone skin. Most people show no reaction.
