Uncaria tomentosa extract (INCI Uncaria Tomentosa Extract) comes from a South American vine known as cat's claw. In a formula it works as a botanical soothing ingredient: it contains alkaloids and polyphenols credited with easing irritation and supporting the skin's barrier function. On efficacy this is a supporting botanical ingredient. Much of the data comes from oral studies, while topical cosmetic evidence is thinner. Realistically expect a mild soothing effect within a formula rather than a pronounced action. Used topically the extract has no systemic relevance, so it can be used during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Oral cat's claw is not advised in pregnancy, but that does not apply to cosmetic use. Tolerance is good. The irritation and allergy potential is low, which suits sensitive skin. Like any plant extract, it could in theory cause a reaction in sensitised people, but most have none.
