It is used mostly in hair and scalp products, where it gives a toning, fresh feel, and sometimes in facial cosmetics for the same sensory purpose. As an active it is supporting. Topical caffeine is credited with effects on the follicle and microcirculation, but the clinical base is limited and results, where they appear, are modest. It is better treated as a pleasant add-on than as a proven anti-hair-loss active. For topical use the systemic contribution is negligible. It can be used during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Tolerance is good, with low irritation and allergy potential, fine for sensitive scalp and skin. It is not noted as comedogenic or drying.
