Pepper fruit extract (INCI Capsicum Annuum Fruit Extract) is obtained from pepper and contains carotenoids. In cosmetics it gives a sensory freshness effect and, in some scalp or body formulas, a light stimulating sensation. On efficacy this is a supporting component of a sensory nature, not a corrective active. Carotenoids add a faint antioxidant note, but do not expect proven results on wrinkles or tone from it. It is used at low cosmetic levels precisely to avoid the heat of the active pepper compound. Topically, at those proportions, it has no systemic relevance, so it can be used during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Tolerance at cosmetic concentrations is good, with low irritation and allergy potential. At high proportions itching or warmth is possible, so the dose matters; on very reactive skin a patch test is useful.
