Contains triterpene saponins (calendulosides), flavonoids (quercetin, isorhamnetin), carotenoids (lutein, β-carotene), essential oils. Mechanism. Anti-inflammatory action via NF-κB suppression and reduced IL-6, IL-1β, TNF-α in skin. Speeds up fibroblast and keratinocyte migration in wounds – suitable for post-procedure recovery. Antimicrobial action against Staphylococcus aureus and Candida albicans is described in vitro. Carotenoids and flavonoids provide a mild antioxidant effect. Where applied. Baby cosmetics (Mustela Calendula, Weleda Baby), creams for sensitive and reactive skin, post-procedure products, hand and body balms, nappy-rash and sunburn products. Concentration 0.5–5%. Khairnar 2013 described faster wound healing after surgery. For paediatric atopic dermatitis Foster 2010 included calendula on the safe-emollient list. Safety. CIR confirmed cosmetic safety. Cross-allergy with Asteraceae (mugwort, ragweed, chamomile) in 5–10% of pollinosis patients – isolated contact dermatitis reports. Hypoallergenic in the general population, non-comedogenic. Pregnancy and lactation – safe topically. Used without restriction. One of the main emollients for gestational skin and breast care during breastfeeding (nipple-fissure healing).
